AbstractSeveral studies have reported the occurrence of savanna patches within the Amazonian forest and several debates have been presented trying to explain their genesis. This study, based on the interpretation of Landsat-5/TM images and SRTM Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), revealed elongated belts arranged into a dendritic pattern that shows an excellent resemblance to modern fluvial channels. This morphological aspect led to propose that the savanna belts developed upon a paleodrainage that became abandoned in the landscape previously to the establishment of the modern drainage basin. The orientation of this paleodrainage contrary to modern channels allows to invoke tectonics as the most likely mechanism driving the fluvial dynamics in this study area.
